16 passengers burnt in Lagos auto crash, five others injured

Sixteen passengers were, on Tuesday, burnt and five others injured in an auto crash that occurred in Epe Local Government, Lagos State.

Twenty-three  passengers were reportedly  involved in the accident out of which  two escaped unhurt while the injured were rushed to the hospital by the Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos Command.

The accident reportedly occurred at about 3 am on Tuesday when a commercial vehicle conveying the passengers collided with an articulated truck and the two vehicles went up in flames.

According to the FRSC Public Relation Officer, Olabisi Sonusi, the accident was caused by  impaired visibility and reckless driving from both drivers, noting that the emergency management agencies raced to the scene for  prompt recovery and evacuation of both vehicles.

She however said the road has been cleared to allow  vehicular movement around the axis.

The Sector Commander Federal Road Safety Corps Lagos (FRSC),  Commander Olusegun Ogungbemide advised motorists to always avoid night journeys because of impaired visibility at that hour.

Reacting to the incident, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, revealed that the truck was conveying sand before it collided with the commercial bus within the axis.

“The two vehicles got burnt as a result of the impact of the collision, and that some of the deceased passengers that were burnt to death were indigenes of Katsina State”.

The LASEMA boss further disclosed that all the deceased passengers have been handed over to their relatives for onward burial in accordance with the faith.
