Alleged assault: Court slams motorist N2m bail

A Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State, on Tuesday slammed a N2 million bail on a 46-year-old motorist, Ayo Bello, accused of causing a petroleum attendant to be injured by fire.

Bello, whose address was not provided, is facing a three-count charge of causing breach of peace, stealing, and assault.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Lazarus Hotepo, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N2 million with two sureties in like sum.

Hotepo said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and one of them should be a traditional ruler.

The case has been adjourned till March 26, for hearing.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Ade Adeosun told the court that the defendant committed the offences on February 10, at 1.00 pm at Rashall Filling Station, Imeke, Badagry, Lagos State.

Adeosun said that the Bello conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by refusing to pay for fuel sold to him and drove off.

“The accused stole 10 litres of petrol, property Rashall Filling Station, sold by Zainab Oriade.

“Bello also assaulted the complainant by causing her bodily harm on her left leg.

“He wounded Zainab Oriade when he zoomed off without paying, which caused the pump in her hand to drop and hit the floor thereby igniting a fire that injured her left leg.

“The offences contravened Sections 166, 285, 170 and 244 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, as amended,’’ he said. (NAN)
