Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has, again, met with all the Chairmen of the 13 local government areas in the state, with a view to finding lasting and sustainable solution to problems associated with inability to pay salaries and pensions of both council workers and retirees.
Governor Sule met with the council chairmen, led by the Chairman of Lafia Local Government Area, Hon. Aminu Muazu Maifata, who doubles as the Chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), at the Government House, on Friday.
According to the Governor, the meeting which was a prelude to the parley held last Friday, is aimed at finding lasting and sustainable solutions to the problem currently confronting the councils, regarding the inability to pay salaries and pensions of their staffs and retirees.
Engineer Sule recalled that at the last meeting, it was agreed by all stakeholders that parties will come up with a workable document towards preferring lasting solutions to the problem.
“I am hoping that by the end of this meeting today, we will find sustainable solutions to the current problem with the payment of LG salaries and pensions,” Governor Sule said.
He expressed satisfaction that the councils were able to pay, at least, one month salaries of workers, as well as one month pension of retirees.
The governor noted that with the payment of one month salary and pension for council workers and retirees, the councils are now owing 1 month salary in some LGs and 2 months in others while also owing 2 months of pension to retirees.
Engineer Sule expressed hope that the meeting will discuss these issues and be able to find lasting solutions based on the work carried out by the Chairmen during the past week.
