Abia rep in trouble for assaulting Bolt driver, quizzed by police

Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives, has landed himself in trouble for an alleged assault on Bolt driver.

The lawmaker, who is being interrogated by the Federal Capital Territory Police Command at its Divisional Headquarters in Maitama, reportedly descended on the e-hailing cab driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, for daring to request to be paid his delivery fee.

Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North & South Federal Constituency, was captured in a viral video when he slapped the man and boasted that he could make the driver “disappear” and without consequences.

The FCT Police Command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, on Monday said in a statement the police is investigating the matter.

According to her, preliminary investigation showed that Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Ikwegh when a dispute arise between them over the method of delivery.

“Alexander Ikwegh, who represents the Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State. The incident occurred on October 27, 2024, at a residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja,” Adeh said.

“The FCT Police Command has received a report at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters regarding an incident involving a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, and Hon. Alexander Ikwegh, who represents the Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State. The incident occurred on October 27, 2024, at a residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwegh when a dispute arose concerning the method of delivery. During this altercation, Mr. Abuwatseya was reportedly physically assaulted.

However, the FCT Police Command took exception to the lawmaker’s derision if the office of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and daring the driver to make calls through to him after slapping him.

“After allegedly slapping the victim, he reportedly remarked with contempt, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” demonstrating a troubling disregard for the authority of law enforcement.

“Currently, the suspect is at the Maitama Police Station undergoing questioning.”

The FCT Commissioner of Police, Tunji Disu, Adeh added, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.
