Nigeria’s Minister of information, Lai Mohammed said the government will lift the ban on the microblogging site, Twitter soon because they have reached a compromise with the social media company.
The ban will be lifted in a matter of days, Mohammed said during a press conference after the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja on Wednesday.
But Nigerians are saying the reason for the government buckling is because of the 2023 general election as that will give them the opportunity to canvas for votes from them.
According to them, political, rather than economic, reasons are behind the government’s decision to lift the ban.
“Lai Mohammed, Tinubu and Buhari Administration want to lift the Twitter ban because, in the next 5 months, their 2023 campaigns will kick off…” one Steven said.
Adetutu Balogun @Tutsy said: “Twitter says it has NOT reached any deal with the Buhari regime for the unblocking of its services in Nigeria.
Lai Mohammed however LIED that the ban would soon be lifted as Twitter has shown readiness to abide by its laid down rules,” she said.
@FirstLadyship said the reason Nigeria wants Twitter to set up an office in the country is so DSS can easily raid the office anything on any flimsy excuse.
“Lai Mohammed is so obsessed with Twitter office, so their DSS dogs can raid & harass Twitter each time their ego is bruised
Fixing the moribund Health Sector is not their priority. Doctors can strike & leave Nigeria. They don’t care if 100 doctors remain. London is a Big Brother,” she said.
According to Peoples Gazette, Twitter denied reaching any agreement with the Nigerian government but that talks are ongoing to reach an agreement.
