Lyedja Santos, a 19-year-old student of E Berilo Wanderley School, has been arrested after her gun jammed while attempting to murder several of her classmates in Brazil.
The incident happened at a high school in the northern Brazilian town of Natal on Tuesday.
According to the Rio Grande de Norte Civil Police, Lyedja, an 11th grade student armed with a gun, two knives and a note stormed her school and while heading to her classroom met an 18-year-old classmate along the hallway and shot him in the head
She then proceeded to her classroom where she met her teacher and other students preparing to take a test.
Luck ran out of her while attempting to shoot the teacher as her gun got jammed. Realising her plan had failed, she turned back and attempted to run away.but was stopped by one of the male classmates who jumped on her head and was able to restrain her.
“We were in the classroom about to take the test and she called her friends to talk to her, to talk about the classroom. A short time passed, about a minute, and we only heard the shot,’ said one of the students.
He added: ‘We didn’t know for sure if it was a shot, we thought it was a bomb. She entered the classroom armed, aimed at the teacher’s head, but the gůn jammed.
When it jammed, she turned her back to try to run, and the boy in the classroom jumped on top of her and managed to pull her away.’
After her arrest, her 38 caliber revolver was recovered from her, several books about serial killers and a note she had written detailing reasons she planned the.attack and saying goodbye to her family and friends.
In the note, Lyedja stated that she wanted to find peace in herself, cited alone, and purchased the weapons without the knowledge of any other person.
She further thanked her friends and family for everything they had done for her and apologized for whatever pain her actions and death would have caused them if she had succeeded in the mass murder and killed herself.
‘I loved each and every one of you, even if I didn’t show it. I hope you understand and forgive me, because that is the only way I will find peace.,” she wrote.
However, the shot student is said to be in stable condition at Monsenhor Walfredo Gurgel Hospital as the bullet was not lodged in his head .
Police have shut the school while further investigations are ongoing.
