No fewer than 105 female students of Junior Secondary Schools across the country are to participate in the female mathematics Olympiad competition organised by the National Mathematical Centre (NMC).
Mr. Jekayinfa Olatunji, Desk Officer on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), NMC, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.
Olatunji said that after this stage, three best students will emerge from each state.
“Those three called amazons from across the 35 states and FCT, will now converge on the centre for one week and there will be thorough tutorials in the first three days in preparation for the grand finale.
“Thereafter, there will be examination for all the 105 participants to select the best three that will be called heroine 1, 2 and 3.’’
He added that whoever emerges as Heroine 1 will be “Queen of Mathematics in Nigeria”.

According to him, mathematics Olympiad competition is SDG4 programme, organised for female students of secondary schools to encourage them in the learning of mathematics even beyond secondary school level.
He said, “SDG4 is about universal education for all and an important slogan is that everybody must be carried along.’’
Olatunji said that the centre wanted to promote girl-child education in the subject, adding that through the competition, their interest and confidence would be boosted.
“This kind of competition will build the spirit of competitiveness and in the process of preparing for the competition; their interest will be boosted in the learning of mathematics.
“Overall, we will have female students that will be interested in furthering their education in mathematics and other related courses,’’ he said.
He said the competition which were in three stages had 120 students at the first stage from the six zones at 40 per zone across the 35 states and FCT. (NAN)
