1 feared killed as journalists on way to Super Eagles match kidnapped in Anambra

Some journalists travelling to Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, to cover Nigeria’s Super Eagles match have reportedly been kidnapped.

The journalists were abducted in the Isseke community in the Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State by armed men, suspected to be members of a secessionist group.

THE NATION reported that while some sources claimed the incident occurred on Wednesday, others indicated it happened early Thursday morning.

The Super Eagles were set to face the Knights of Libya on Thursday at the Uyo Stadium.

A source claimed that one of the journalists was killed, while the whereabouts of the others remained unknown.

Anambra State Police Command spokesman, Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident, adding that a team had been deployed in the location to search for the victims.

“As I speak to you, a joint operation is ongoing. We are, however, not sure if they are in captivity or were able to escape.”

The police spokesman said he had no information on the rescue of any of the victims.
